What's in a Name?

The Unicorn

With the advent of Super League came additional names for clubs, i.e. Warrington Wolves, Bradford Bulls etc. Latchford Albion adopted the name Unicorns.

A mythical and heraldic animal, the unicorn is represented by medieval writers as having the legs of a buck, the tail of a lion, the head and body of a horse and a single horn, white at the base, black in the middle and red at the tip, in the middle of its forehead. The body is white, the head red, and eyes blue.

In the Middle Ages, the unicorn's horn was a symbol of power. In Ancient China the unicorn had royal status and was also considered a lucky creature. Legend tells that it took part in fierce battles with the Sun and swallowed eclipses. Another popular belief was that the unicorn by dipping its horn into a liquid could detect whether or not it contained poison.

Unicorn

In the Christian Church, the unicorn stands for the Virgin. Unicorns were associated with purity and had the power to detect impurity. Pliny said men could never catch a unicorn. There was a belief that only a virgin could catch and tame this mythical creature. The unicorn's horn was also believed to be an antidote for poison.

ALBION

Albion is an ancient and poetical name for Great Britain, probably from the white cliffs that face Gaul (France), but possibly it may originally have been the Celtic name of all Great Britain.

One legend is that a giant son of Neptune, named Albion, discovered the country and ruled over it for forty-four years.

Another such derivation is that the fifty daughters of the King of Syria (the eldest of whom was named Albia), were all married on the same day and murdered their husbands on their wedding night. They were set adrift in a ship as punishment and eventually reached this western isle where they duly married natives.

UNITY

The club motto is just one word, 'unity'. The Chambers dictionary defines unity as "the arrangement of all the parts to one purpose or effect;a single whole; the number one".
